Apply NowIbagué is located 200 km (125 miles) West of the capital of Colombia, Bogota. Its geographical location of 4°26 North latitude and 75°13 West longitude means it is ideally located almost directly in the centre of the country.
It is 3 hours to Bogotá, 8 hours to Medellin and 5 hours to Cali, the second and third biggest cities in the country. Its altitude of 1,248 meters ensures its climate is pleasant and warm all year round, with an average temperature of 22° Centigrade (79° Fahrenheit)
Ibagué is a peaceful and safe city surrounded by majestic mountains in a beautiful valley. Blessed with great weather, Ibagué is warm but never too hot. It is the perfect place to study and spend some time.
As it is a mid-sized city of approximately 500,000 people, Ibagué is large enough to cater for the needs of travelers while sparing them the stress and strains of large city living.
Ibagué is known as the Cuidad de Musica (City of Music) and is well know by Colombians as the center of Colombian music and folklore, due to its excellent conservatory and music academy. Its folklore festival in the last week of June is attended by Colombians from all over the world.
Besides the beautiful landscape, there are interesting museums and great outdoors activities to do and see. The most remarkable thing about Ibagué despite its size local people are friendly, laid back and extremely warm and social.
The city’s Perales Airport has domestic flights operated by most of the Colombian carriers. With 64 flights a week it means Ibagué is well connected to a wide range of destination.
Likewise the bus terminal has connections to all major destinations throughout the country.
I couldn't fault Ibagué as a city. It had everything I needed and yet still kept an untouched nature that is hard to describe. I never once felt unsafe or in danger.
Maybe it sounds a bit egotistic but I enjoyed being a novelty. I literally had people coming up and talking to me simply out of curiosity at seeing a foreigner.
Everyone wanted to know where I was from and what I was doing in Ibagué. Talk about ready made conversational Spanish! This was opposed to places like Cartagena where foreigners are a dime-a-dozen and the locals only want to speak to you in English.
