Colombian Cooking program

The food is often one of the biggest surprises that travelers to Colombia experience. Often neglected by tour guide books, the country has a wide and varied cuisine. Colombia offers a full range of environments from tropics to highlands and because of this you can find a range of fruits, vegetables and meats that European chefs would die for.

Ibagué's proximity to rural areas means produce never needs to travel more than a few hours, which ensures that the flavors and diversity of the food is phenomenal.

A visit to the local market is a cultural experience in itself, as farmers and sellers meet in vast street markets, creating a chaos and excitement that is hard to describe but which is an essential part of Colombian life.

About the program

This program gives students up to 6 hours a week of food and cooking classes three times a week. They have the chance to be involved with the full process of the preparation of local cuisine. Teachers and students visit the local markets and learn about the different types of produce as well as the delicate art of market negotiations and etiquette.

Back in the kitchen they gain hands-on experience on how to prepare a wide range of traditional dishes using local techniques. At the end of the class they eat the results, sharing with a local family.

This program gives a real insight into a very important part of Colombia’s rich culture.

Availability and Price

This activity is only available to students in our City Setting (Ibagué) and has an extra fee of $US 150 per week. The fees cover all ingredient and equipment.

I loved the Cooking Program it was not something I normally would have thought of doing but it was so interesting both from a cultural point of view as well as learning a lot. The food in Colombia is really delicious and I loved discovering all about the different ingredients and local specialities. I ate way too much though.
